While our winters can be long and cold, we also have some very beautiful weather in Winnipeg during our other three seasons. Following the long winters nap we look forward to the warm and sunny days, when we can start the spring yard clean up and planting of the garden flowers. This is a passion of ours and our garden is our haven of solitude and relaxation. We have created a special place to escape the busy and hurried nature of the city that surrounds us. We are the happiest we can be when we are digging and all covered in dirt bringing new life and color to the garden.
When we first purchased our home and property, there was only a house and a lawn. Everything had to be done from scratch. This is exactly the way we wanted it. Over the course of 13 years we have created this garden that is our "Garden of Eden." We have added a feature each year, which is always exciting and constantly changes the appearance of the garden.
Currently, we have two water ponds, one is stocked with goldfish and the other with water loving plants like waterlilies and such. Accenting these water features are fountains and miniature waterfalls that provide such a soothing sound. These water features can also be enjoyed in the evening and nighttime hours as there are soft ambient lighting adjacent to these structures.
In amongst the shrubs and ornamental trees can be found an assortment of concrete birdbaths and water fountains adorning the landscape. Another feature in the garden that we are very fond of is a cedar arbor that is usually decorated with an assortment of colorful flowering hanging potted plants. There always seems to be an increasing variety of birds that also enjoy these garden features.
Among the fruit trees in the garden is Casey's apple tree. We called it Casey's apple tree because it was planted the same year Casey was brought into our family. Ever since Casey was a small pup he would pluck his own apples from the tree for a backyard snack. We do not know when or why this began, but he continues to enjoy his apples every year off Casey's apple tree.
The garden is equally beautiful in the autumn as it is in the spring and summer seasons. The ornamental shrubs and trees were specially chosen for their brilliant foliage that they offer when they turn in the autumn. This is a particularly special time to spend in the garden, as the Canada Geese are now getting ready to migrate. We are very lucky to witness this spectacular site each year, literally hundreds of geese flying directly over our house and garden on a daily basis. What a site to behold!
