Our Empty Hearts
After the emotional events of Casey's passing, our hearts were deeply saddened and empty. We grieved endlessly, however we did find comfort in our fond memories of Casey. As we talked of our fond memories, we wondered if we would ever be ready to invite another canine family member into our lives. The pain of our loss was much too strong to give it serious thought. What was about to happen next, surprises us still to this day.
Both of us found ourselves looking through photo albums, visiting websites, and reading about dogs perhaps in an attempt fill that gigantic void left behind of a fallen friend. As we unconsciously did this, we began too consciously notice our behaviours and asked ourselves "what does this mean". Was this an expression of our grief, or was this a sign of readiness/willingness to invite another dog into our lives.
In order for us to understand, we needed to be completely frank and honest with ourselves, and each other. We asked the hard questions of our own feelings. Are we ready for this? Is it too soon after Casey's' passing? Would we be doing this for all the right reasons, and not to soothe our pain of grieving Casey? Would we compare this new puppy with Casey, and impose expectations even if unknowingly?
The questions we asked went on and on, and without answers that we could be 100 percent sure of. Our conclusion was this; love is not a logical process with an all-knowing beginning and an end. If you never take a chance to experience it, you will never know how beautiful the experience will or could be. What we did know for sure was we could give another dog a very loving and a caring home. We searched our hearts, and both agreed that Casey would be happy to know that we would give another puppy the same wonderful life he experienced. With this, the search began to find our new family member.
What was easy to agree upon, was we both wanted another wire-haired fox terrier puppy. Our love for this breed is embedded within us, and we knew it would be a difficult and perhaps a lengthy search. Little did we know, our search would be rewarded this soon in finding Colby.
