"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." Mark Twain
Historically, this wonderful bond between humans and dogs can be traced back as far as 25,000 years. All domestic dogs belong to a single species, "Canis Familiaris". Over the passage of time, evolved the many hundreds of various breeds we know today. What has stood the test of time is the special bond that humans and dogs still share today.
Dogs share every aspect of the human lifestyle. They are our work-mates, playmates, and our constant companions. There is a very strong desire by dogs to be useful and to be part of our families, as humans have the desire to have dogs useful within our lives. There are many examples of this mutual partnership.
We have over the years witnessed the family farms growing increasingly more mechanized with equipment to maintain the land and livestock. Yet, the dog still has a useful and productive function herding cattle, sheep, and other livestock, and is very happy to do this job side by side with the human companion.
In our airports and police departments throughout the world, we see the dogs sniffing for illegal substances. In our hospitals and nursing homes, we see the dog as a therapist. Demonstrating unconditional acceptance and love, bringing out the best in our humanity. On our streets and shops of our cities and townships, we see the dog assisting the handicapped human. Whether it be for sight, hearing, for alert dogs sensing seizures or for other physical limitations. The dog is there helping the human, and very happy carrying out the assigned tasks.
However, the most important job to the dog is to offer its love. For any amount of love and kindness shown to the dog, they return this love and kindness in abundance. They are intelligent, thinking and feeling creatures that have earned and deserve our respect.
So as we progress through this rapid and ever changing future ahead. Take some comfort that some things will remain unchanged. This special bond between the dog and humanity will be the constant. History has proven this much.
